The Biggest Deep Sea Discoveries To Come Out Of 2023
You might think that by 2024, we’d know everything there is to know about the world. However, the reality is that there’s still a ton that’s a complete mystery. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it means there are still so many wonderful discoveries for us to make.
That’s especially the case for the world below the surface of the water, the majority of which we’ve yet to explore and learn more about. We’ve supposedly only covered around 5% of the underwater world, although we continue to make some amazing deep sea discoveries year after year, such as the biggest deep sea discoveries to come out of 2023.
A hidden ecosystem was found beneath hydrothermal vents near Central America
Experts have been investigating some parts of the underwater world for decades, yet new discoveries are still being made. For instance, hydrothermal vents in the East Pacific Ridge have been of interest to scientists for some 40 years. However, it was only in August 2023 that they found a hidden ecosystem beneath them that revealed various sub-seafloor life, such as snails and octopi. The discovery was only possible thanks to the use of an ROV, the robotic arm of which was able to scrape away the sediment beneath these hydrothermal events.

A golden orb with mysterious origins was discovered on the seafloor
You’ll find some strange things below the surface of the water, including a golden orb that was discovered in September. Located on the seafloor in the Gulf of Alaska, it was identified as biological in origin, but researchers were clueless as to what it was. Guesses ranged from an egg to a sponge, and the mystery carries on to this day. Even the reason it’s colored the way it is has caused confusion, given it was found around 10,825 feet below the water’s surface. It’s worth noting that the orb didn’t retain its structure when it was recovered and apparently “melted” after being removed from the water.
A species of snailfish that can cope with significant pressure was discovered
With it being so hard to explore the deeper parts of the ocean due to the immense pressure down there, there are still plenty of underwater species we’ve yet to discover. One we learned about in April last year was a type of snailfish believed to belong to the Pseudoliparis genus. The white fish were found in one of the deepest underwater trenches, with their bodies well adapted to the dangerous conditions. They don’t have scales and instead possess a gelatinous layer that can apparently absorb the pressure of the water to help them survive down there. They also reportedly have certain chemicals in their bodies that provide additional protection.

A map of over 19,000 underwater volcanoes was revealed to the world
You might not think there are that many volcanoes on Earth, given we’re not constantly hearing about eruptions devastating lives. However, there are thousands of them on the planet, many of which are active. A ton of these are beneath the surface of the water, with researchers revealing a map of over 19,000 of them in April 2023. Many of the volcanoes shown were newly discovered, with radar data from satellites helping to pull the map together. It’s possible there could be thousands more not yet discovered, but the ones identified should help experts get a better understanding of things like ocean currents and plate tectonics.
Heat waves can apparently happen as far down as the seafloor
Many of us are very familiar with climate change and the rise in heat waves likely caused by the warming of the planet. However, what we never realized is just how many places these heat waves occur in. In March last year, it emerged that some of the deepest points in the ocean have also been experiencing such phenomena. Unfortunately, this is not a positive discovery, especially with the revelation that they could be more severe and last longer than heat waves on the surface. As time goes on, this may have a serious impact on the creatures that live on the seafloor, such as lobsters, cod, and scallops.

Several deep sea coral reefs were discovered in pristine condition
With the planet getting warmer, we’ve been seeing plenty of coral reefs struggling to cope with the heat. However, an expedition off the coast of Ecuador in 2023 revealed that there are some deep sea coral reefs that are still in pristine condition. Set at least 1,000 feet below the surface, the coral has likely been thriving here for thousands of years. Usually, you wouldn’t find coral reefs so deep, yet these ones have coped fine at these depths, even providing homes to various anemones, crustaceans, and more. It’s nice to know some of these natural beauties are still coping okay, even if others are struggling.
All the biggest deep sea discoveries to come out of 2023 show just how much more there is for us to learn about Earth’s underwater ecosystems. It also makes us very excited for what new revelations may come in the future.
